Successful Training Week: We’re ready!

At Borea Adventures, the foundation of every unforgettable experience is our dedicated team of guides. We’re excited to share that we’ve just wrapped up a successful and energising training week with both returning and newly hired guides—right here in the heart of the Westfjords.

This training week brought together seasoned professionals and fresh faces, all with a shared passion for the outdoors. Many of our new team members come to us with years of experience in guiding hiking and kayaking expeditions across rugged terrains and remote coastlines. Their expertise is a perfect match for the wild and beautiful environment we operate in, especially in **Hornstrandir Nature Reserve**, where many of our signature adventures take place.

Over the course of the week, our guides engaged in hands-on safety drills, environmental awareness sessions, and terrain-specific training designed to sharpen their skills for the unique challenges of the Westfjords. Whether it’s leading a multi-day hiking trek through Hornstrandir’s dramatic fjords and flower-filled valleys, or guiding sea kayaking expeditions along sheer cliffs teeming with seabirds, our team is ready to deliver safe, sustainable, and deeply memorable experiences.

We’re proud to welcome new talent who not only bring diverse guiding backgrounds but also a strong commitment to Borea’s values—respect for nature, connection with local culture, and a drive to go beyond the ordinary. As we look ahead to the upcoming season, we’re confident our team is more prepared than ever to lead exceptional adventures into Iceland’s remote wilderness.

Whether you’re planning your first trip to the Westfjords or returning for another unforgettable journey, we can’t wait to have fun in nature with you.

## Twenty Years of Adventures!

#### Borea reaches the milestone of successful two decades of fun filled adventures.

When we started Borea in 2006 we had no clue where the road would take us. It's not been easy but most of the time it's been fun and meeting and get to know all the fun loving people along the way has been a privilege.

Over Twenty Years of Adventures

Relocation of Bjarnarnes ferry

We have decided to relocate the home harbour of Bjarnarnes, our ferry to Hornstrandir Nautre Reserve, from the harbour in Bolungavík to the harbour in our hometown, [Ísafjörður](https://www.westfjords.is/en/service/borea-adventures-iceland).

Number one reason being, that our passengers don’t have to worry about transportation to Bolungavík anymore. The new location is within walking distance from our office in the Borea café.

Second reason being, that this will bring us, the staff at [Borea](https://boreaadventures.com/day-tours/) closer together and we’ll see each others faces more often and we happen to like each others faces…

So we hope this will make our lives and yours just a little bit easier.

Seats are booking very fast for spring 2015 and you should start making up your mind to get your hands on the ski trip of a lifetime. We have dates available in March, one week in April (20-25th) and on the last two trips in May. It’s never guaranteed when the best snow and wether conditions are. We’ve had knee deep powder in the end of May.

Hope you make it to Iceland for an amazing skiing experience!

# Iceland remains the world’s most peaceful country!

Dear friends,

We are delighted to share some good news from Iceland.

For the ninth consecutive year, Iceland has been ranked the world’s most peaceful country according to the Global Peace Index, published by the Institute for Economics & Peace.

For those of us who call Iceland home, this recognition reflects many of the qualities that make our country such a special place to visit – a strong sense of community, a safe environment, breathtaking landscapes, and the freedom to explore.

Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning for another adventure, you can look forward to experiencing one of the safest and most welcoming destinations in the world.

We look forward to welcoming you to Iceland and introducing you to the beauty of the Westfjords.

Warm regards,

The Borea Adventures Team.

Iceland remains the world’s most peaceful country!

New Tour – Wild Camp Discovery!

Do you like the idea of packing a kayak full of camping gear and disappearing into the wilderness for a few days? If you do, then we have the [perfect trip](https://boreaadventures.com/multi-day/Wild_Camp_Discovery/) for you. Heading out into the wilderness can seem a little daunting at first. What if I capsize my kayak? What if the weather turns a little ‘Icelandic’? What if I can’t find my campsite? These are all legitimate concerns for those who are not used to it. This new tour takes care of all of these concerns, leaving you to enjoy the beautiful nature and magnificent views.

We are very excited to announce this new multi-day kayak tour aimed at those who want to experience the delights of multi-day kayaking and wild camping but don’t have huge amounts of experience.

The benefits of kayak camping are well known. It’s all about simplicity. Traveling light means that you can fully immerse yourself in the environment without huge amounts of gear holding you back and getting in the way. Sleeping outside is a wonderful experience which not only allows you to see but also hear and smell the nature around you. The bark of the Arctic Fox in the distance and the smell of the salty sea breeze coming from the ocean while in your tent, is something you will remember forever.

We camp on a small secluded beach at the very tip of Folafótur peninsula. It’s a charming area with magnificent views across the fjord to the snowy mountains of the Snæfjallaströnd coastline. The area is rich in history. There are ruins of houses and small farms which were populated about a hundred people during the early twentieth century.

We visit the island of Vigur, which is home to thousands of breeding sea birds during the summer months. The island is known for the farmers who collect the highly insulative eider down feather from the nests after the birds have left, which is then used to make luxury bedding. After a tasty lunch on the island, the next stop is the rocky shoreline of Hvítanes peninsula where we visit the colony of seals. They are very curious and often swim close to the kayaks, allowing us great photo opportunities. On the final day we complete our trip by kayaking all the way back to Ísafjörður.

There are many reasons why this tour is particularly suited to inexperienced kayakers. The area in which we kayak is fairly sheltered, with no long crossings or exposure to big swell. If the wind picks up, we have many options for alternative routes and the distances we cover are shorter than on our other tours. All of this combined creates a wonderful introduction to kayak camping.

Please get in touch if you have any question about this, or any of our other tours.

See you next summer!

A Journey to Remember

Exploring Glacier Fjords

As guides, we gather countless stories and make many unforgettable experiences while meeting wonderful people. Yet, amidst all of the trips during the season, there’s always that one exceptional journey that stays with us, creating a special space in our memories. This was one of those, truly [a trip for the books](https://boreaadventures.com/tours/glacier-fjords-kayaking/).

## Day 1: Greeted by the Eagle

Our kayaking journey begins with nature throwing a curve-ball. Weather gods ask for a change of plans so we skip the usual drop-off point and head directly to [Kviar Lodge](https://boreaadventures.com/tours/kviar-ski-lodge/).

After settling in, we set off for Veiðileysufjörður fjord. The **six-kilometre kayaking** stretch along the picturesque cliffs was already breathtaking and on top of that, we were lucky to spot an eagle soaring overhead.

Talk about setting the stage!

As we kayaked further **into the fjord**, growling tummies lead us to a lunch spot surrounded by blueberries, the perfect dessert. Some of us soak up the sun while others use this warm **Icelandic summer** day to take a refreshing dip in the glacier [fjord](https://boreaadventures.com/tours/lost-fjords/). With the sun shining down, it’s the perfect start to our journey. Knowing that the wind is supposed to pick up, we start heading back to [Kviar](https://boreaadventures.com/hornstrandir/kviar-lodge/), managing the returning journey against a light wind without much hassle. Arriving back, we quickly fire up the sauna and enjoy a relaxing evening.

## Day 2: The hidden treasures of Lónafjörður

The following day greets us with sunshine and minimal wind, perfect for exploring **another fjord, Lónafjörður**. Our first stop? A sandspit that hides a secret lake, tucked away from the sea’s view. The lake’s calm waters offer a beautiful reflection, ten out of ten already.

Continuing our journey past the mountain Einbúi, named for its hermit-like, solitary stature, we come across a seal family that had chosen to make their home in this **stunning location** nestled at the base of the glacier fjord, beneath [cliffs](https://boreaadventures.com/tours/green-cliffs-of-hornstrandir/) and a waterfall.

Lunch at the bottom of the fjord recharges the group\`s batteries and gets everyone excited to continue kayaking around the mountain Einbúi and into Rangali, an arm of the Lónafjörður fjord. With the low tide revealing the stunning beauty of Rangali, we navigate around rocks, spotting two [arctic foxes](https://boreaadventures.com/tours/midnight-sun-and-arctic-foxes/) going about their afternoon hunt.

As the day wraps, we start our return journey, leading us back on the opposite side of the fjord.

On our journey back, perhaps fuelled by the many stories we heard that day, one of the guests spots a **mythical-looking stone-turned Troll**. As I now reflect, I’m left pondering whether exhaustion led us to imagine this or if there might truly be more to the story. Do you see the Troll too?

## Day 3: Foraging dinner from the glacier fjord

For our **last day of kayaking**, we decide to kayak into Hrafnfjörður fjord. After crossing Lónafjörður, we spot a lively bunch of cormorants that loves hanging out at the tip of the peninsula. On the third day, with a few guests feeling the kayak miles, we opt for a more relaxed pace, taking extra breaks to soak in the surroundings of the glacier.

Eight kilometres in, we decide to have **lunch at a scenic spot** beneath towering cliffs and a beautiful waterfall. After lunch, some guests join me to explore the [waterfall](https://www.westfjords.is/en/service/borea-adventures-iceland), scavenging mushrooms for dinner, and collecting blue mussels along the shore. After securing dinner, the group begins their return **journey to Kviar**, passing by curious seals and birds. The sea gets a bit feisty on the way back, but the group keeps up the good spirits and makes it back just in time to squeeze in another sauna session before starting dinner preparations.

As everyone participates in cleaning and preparing the foraged dinner, the evening becomes infused with such excitement that it is easily one of the most memorable moments of the trip. Incredible scenery with the glacier, Drandajokull as a backdrop.

A Very Westfjords Winter

One of the most frequently asked questions from our guests is “What do you do during the winter?”. Yes, it’s true, tourism sees a sudden decrease during the winter months (and autumn, and spring!). But that doesn’t mean that we pack up and head for the hot tubs for 9 months, although an occasional visit is a must.

Summer time is our busy time, so as soon as the autumn is here we’re definitely happy for a chance to rest a little. We love working out in some of the most beautiful nature you will find anywhere in the world, but our sore legs give a little sigh of relief when the bookings start to slow.

Many use this time to travel. The adventurous nature of our team means taking a break is a very temporary affair. While Iceland’s average temperature begins to drop and the mountains slowly transform into their wintery white colour, we like to travel to seek out adventures in other parts of the world, where the weather is slightly more favourable. From mountain biking and rock climbing, to white water kayaking and fell running, our team know how to enjoy themselves in the outdoors.

Some of our guides seek work in other parts of the world. Some go to the south of Iceland to lead glacier hiking tours, some head further afield to work in exotic locations. However, they always return during the summer as the draw of working in the amazing Westfjords of Iceland is simply too much!

Many in our team study during the winter. We certainly have a few bright sparks amongst us, some are studying mathemantics while others learn about geography and geology. Some even have degrees in outdoor education and leadership, which certainly helps out while guiding groups in the wilderness!

The company does not take any such breaks from tourism. The gear needs to be maintained, the vehicles all need servicing and our beloved Kvíar lodge is always being improved. Now with a wind turbine!

And of course the marketing team is busy attending conferences, developing new tours, improving our web content and continuing the social media grind.

Our town of Ísafjörður doesn’t see any direct sunlight for around two months during the winter due to it’s northerly latitude and the surrounding high mountain tops. However, as the Christmas and New Year holiday seasons pass, the sunlight begins to show itself again. With this comes great ski conditions. We’re lucky enough to have great skiing in the area with downhill and cross country ski areas as well as world class ski touring, especially in Hornstrandir Nature Reserve.

During the spring time, Ísafjörður hosts an international cross country ski race and we always enjoy competing or cheering on the competitors. The music highlight of the year comes in the form of Aldrei Fór Ég Suður (I Never Went South) music festival every Easter. A great chance to hear Icelands best music.

As you can see, there’s plenty to do! Before we know it, the midnight sun returns along with our wonderfully adventurous guests who join us on our tours, and we get to explore all of our favourite hiking and kayaking areas all over again!

Hornstrandir Nature Reserve can be a gift that keeps on giving. But the area can also eat you alive and spit you out the other end.

Hornstranded!

The most remote corner of Iceland is called Hornstrandir. Sticking out into the North Atlantic, the nature and climate is rough and unforgiving to the unprepared. The area was habited for thousands of years but was abandoned in the late fifties when people saw more opportunities in the towns and villages further South.
I’ve seen many hikers with high hopes boarding the ferries in Ísafjörður, looking forward to some nice days of hiking in Hornstrandir, only to be picked up the day after with everything soaking wet, broken tent poles and a big dent in their self esteem. Also, nobody wants to be the person that the ranger sends back right on the beach because he or she is wearing jeans, carrying a tent from Walmart under the arm and sandwiches in a shopping bag.

So, here are few points to get you on the right track and lead you to a successful backpacking in Hornstrandir. Most of it also applies to other wilderness areas in Iceland.

**1. Hornstrandir is a wilderness area.** Remember that. Don’t expect any services there. So you have to be self sufficient. Only exception is the Old Doctors House in Hesteyri, Búðir in Hlöðuvík Bay (accommodation. Has to be pre-ordered) and the Hornbjarg Lighthouse in Látravík Bay (only operated for few weeks). All other houses you see are private and sometimes occupied by the descendants of the people that lived there in the old days.

**2. You’re on a private land.** Most of the area is a private land and you should respect that. Especially when bypassing houses that are obviously occupied. No peeping on windows!

**3. Only camp on designated campsites.** We know that the campsites are pretty primitive but they have outhouses and also act as a checking point if you get lost of don’t show up on your booked ferry boat back.

**4. No open fires.** The driftwood is owned by the landowners. They use it for their stoves. Leave it alone.

**5. Carry your trash out.** No explanation needed here.

**6. The emergency shelters are ONLY for emergencies.** Use them if you’re hurt, everything is wet or the weather is seriously bad. They are not very nice but better than nothing. Most of them are worse than a decent tent and the radios hardly work.

**7. Only carry what you need. Not what you want.** Making your pack as light as possible, is a big step to a happy backpacking trip. So no pillows, metal cutlery, heavy tent, canned food etc. Use the space in your pack for the good stuff like extra socks, good mittens and puffy jacket.

**8. Is anybody out there? Communication.** Well, there is hardly any communication in the area. You can find mobile signal in some of the mountain passes facing South and many places along the cliffs of Hornbjarg. Other means of communication that is becoming available for everybody, is Garmin InReach. It works on satellites and can be rented at [www.safetravel.is.](https://www.safetravel.is.) The InReach has an SOS function that you can activate if things turn really sour. Next thing you’ll hear will probably be a helicopter hovering above your head. It’s also pretty cheap to buy and can save you if you get into trouble.

**9. The paths are hardly paths.** The lines on your map are routes. Not necessarily paths. There are some paths but most of them are rocky. But you should stay on them if they exist.

**10. My hiking boots are trash.** That’s probably true. I’ve not yet found the right pair of shoes for Hornstrandir. The area is wet in many places, rocky and walking through wet grass makes most of them leak. Bring shoes that are high up on the ankle for support, relatively new, and wax leather shoes with proper fat before your trip. Trail shoes are not the right shoes for the area. Or Iceland in general. It’s also good to bring short gaiters to prevent snow from getting in your shoes.

**11. Travel plan.** Discuss your travel plan with the staff at the Information Center. They can tell you if it’s realistic or not. Best is to leave your plan there in case something happens.

**12. Cotton Kills – Wool is Cool.** For God’s sake leave your jeans at home! If seriously thinking about bringing your jeans with you, I suggest the following. Soak them in your sink, put them on and try to run. Impossible. Cotton soaks up so much water and that’s why cotton is good to mop floors. Same applies to cotton T shirts. Wool is the best insulator you can find. Just look at what Nature does and follow.

**13. All I got is this lousy 15 years old rain jacket.** Proper rain gear is really essential. When looking for rain gear, buy Gore Tex. Most other breathable “Tex”materials are worthless in the Icelandic horizontal rain. You also need waterproof pants. They are equally important. If you can’t afford Gore Tex, bring non breathable 100% rubber coated nylon rain gear. Then a thin nylon wind barrier jacket when it’s not raining.

**14. Did I wet my bed? – the right tent for the job.** Waking up in the middle of the night in a puddle of water, is not fun. Three season tent is essential and only buy/borrow/rent from the serious players on the market. The price tag indicates the quality here. Make sure you can repair broken poles (aluminium tube and tape) and rips.

**15. Bad weather? Just wait five minutes.** Weather forecast and tidal plan. There is no excuse to be caught with your pants down when a storm hits you on a top of a mountain pass. Today’s weather forecasts are pretty accurate and available to everybody. Use [Iceland Meteorological Office](http://www.vedur.is/) website and take screen shots on your phone for later. Also good is to print out the text forecast or write it down. You know, pen and paper! If you get 3G signal you should check the latest forecast whenever possible. Some of the routes require getting pass tricky points on the beach. For that reason, it’s good to print out the tidal plan. Check Easytide online. Choose the reference point closest to your traveling area.

**16. Is this the right Fjord? The navigator´s dilemma.** Today’s technology is great for navigation and getting from A to B doesn’t anymore require the skills of using the solar system. First, get a map. Physical one printed on paper. We know that’s old school but it doesn’t require battery power to find your way. GPS is essential. Best is a small Garmin that can run a long time without changing batteries. You can also use your phone using apps like Gaia or PDF Maps. Pay for a subscription so you can download the appropriate map before leaving on your trip. Also, learn how to use it! You don’t want to end up in the wrong fjord where no boats come like a couple in June 2018.

**17. I’m out of here – changing your travel plan.** Make sure you’ve booked a boat ride back at the end of your trip. Then you might decide to extend or shorten your trip. That’s fine but you need to let the agency where you booked the tickets, know. Also note that there are few companies operating scheduled boat service. You will have to buy a new ticket if cancelling with one of them and deciding to book a boat back with another. It’s a good rule to leave your travel plan at a website called [Safe Travel](http://www.safetravel.is/). So if something happens, the authorities can trace your route and find you. There is also loads of information there about traveling in Iceland.

**18. You wait for the boats – the boats don’t wait for you!** The boat services try everything they can to be on time. It’s not always possible since there are many factors that control that. Weather is obviously important. Then there might be many passengers with a lot of gear that takes time to off load, there might be few drop off points before your pickup point and people might be late. Expect at least an hour up to 2,5 hours before you’re picked up. So if the boat leaves at 9 am from Ísafjörður, expect a pickup between 10 and 11:30 for pickups that are one hour sailing time away. For Hornvik, the pickup is usually 2,5 to 3 hours after departure from Ísafjörður. Make sure you’re on time since the boats don’t wait for you. If you’re not at the designated pickup point, the crew scans the area with binoculars. If there is no sign of you, they leave and inform the office that you didn’t board the boat. The office contacts the Police and they might call out the Search and Rescue.

**19. There is more than one boat company.** Keep in mind that there are few companies operating in Hornstrandir. So make sure you jump on the boat with the correct company. Otherwise you’ll be charged again. Also if you decide to change your plan and come back with another boat service, you have to buy another ticket. And remember to let the company know where you purchased the initial tickets. Otherwise we might start looking for you.

**20. I got delayed and missed my wedding.** First rule of thumb, is to have a least one day between your planned arrival back to civilisation and flying out of the country. So, If the boat can’t pick you up because of bad weather, your whole plan doesn’t get messed up.

**21. Oh, what a cute fox – leave the wildlife alone.** The nature and wildlife in Hornstrandir is totally protected. The landowners have certain rights to harvest nature but not you! Please back away if you stumble upon nests or fox dens. The foxes are especially vulnerable in June when the cubs are just getting out of the dens and just a little disturbance can harm them. The parents are super busy feeding them and trying to stay healthy at the same time. Stay at least 40 meters away from fox dens. Never feed them and stay on the paths. Few foxes are around some campsites and are getting pretty comfortable around humans. Don’t feed them. I know that everybody does but at least then give them protein. Meat, eggs and fish. Not candy or biscuits that can cause stomach problems and make them sick.

Borea Adventures offers a daily boat service to Hornstrandir Nature Reserve during the summer months. We operate two boats that are both seaworthy and built for a pleasurable journey. Schedule your trip.

Hornstrandir Nature Reserve

History of Hornstrandir

Frequently Asked Questions

Inhabitants of Hornstrandir relocated away from the reserve during the 1940-50's due to overarching societal shifts in Iceland. Jobs supplying foreign military bases in southern regions of Iceland attracted residents searching for cash paying jobs. This offered intergenerational wealth, rather than relying on fishing, hunting and pastoral rhythms of tradition.

When and why did inhabitants move away?

In the mid-20th century, the Icelandic government began to consider the area for potential development, including plans to build a dam and hydroelectric power station. However, due to protests from environmental activists, these plans were eventually scrapped, and in 1975, Hornstrandir was declared a nature reserve.

When was it made into a nature reserve?

Hornstrandir has become a popular destination for hikers, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts. Despite its popularity, Hornstrandir remains relatively untouched by commercial tourism, and visitors are encouraged to respect the reserve’s natural beauty and fragile ecosystem. By doing so, tourists can help to preserve the area’s unique charm and ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy its pristine wilderness.

Weather

## The Weather in Iceland

Contrary to popular belief, Iceland has very mild, coastal climate. The mild conditions stem from the Gulf Stream as well as being affected by the East Greenland polar currents. These systems curve southeastwards around the northern and eastern coasts of the country. It can vary from bright sunny days with endless blue skies to periods of wind and rain and even snow or sleet in July – nothing is guaranteed.

The summer months of May to August are usually the easiest time for travelling in the Westfjords area. The Fall, Winter and Spring also provide their own exciting opportunities for adventures. In our opinion there is no such thing as bad weather, just different kinds of [weather](https://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/areas/), providing new challenges to enjoy. A calm winter night at anchor in a remote fjord with cold, crisp air and magnificent northern lights racing across the sky is something you will never forget even if the next day brings a nasty snowstorm!

The average temperature in the summer is less than 10ºC with average highs in the mid teens, but a quick change should be expected. To mention a few extreme examples we could be enjoying leisurely sailing in +18ºC with hardly any snow in sight as people did on February 17th 1998 or on the totally opposite end of the spectrum fighting through extreme blizzards with -31ºC as people did on February 4th 1980. In the summer we could be basking in a heat wave with a temperature of +29ºC as we had on July 2nd 1991 or shivering in snow and -4ºC as on July 21st 1986.

About Ísafjörður

Ísafjörður is the biggest town in the West Fjords with 3200 inhabitants and is the centre of commerce and public services for the whole region. The town has more than 1000 years of history on its back and through the centuries it was a very important fish exporting town. The oldest buildings in Iceland, built by Danish merchants in the 17th century, are well preserved in the lowest part of town and now host the Maritime Museum and a seafood restaurant.

## What others say about Ísafjörður?

“Lying hours from anywhere, over unpaved roads and mountain passes, Ísafjördur is like a tiny city, with almost everything you could need.” Alex Elliott, Atlantica Magazine. Ísafjördur is about community first and foremost.

The architecture of Ísafjördur has been shaped with foreign influences through the decades and many restorerd houses can be found in all different shapes and sizes. A stroll through the old part is truly like walking through a museum.

“…charming, relaxed streets flanked be old three-story buildings with businesses on the first floor and apartments above…” Paul.F. Nikolov, Grapevine Magazine.

April and May bring a sense of stability to the Westfjords, offering extended periods of calm weather that are perfect for ski touring. However, the high Arctic setting in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean brings occasional storms that can last one or two days. We would like to remind our guests that bad weather can always happen, and it is part of the adventure. Situated in the heart of the Atlantic, fast-moving low-pressure systems arrive and depart swiftly.

During April and May, temperatures in the mountainous landscapes typically range from a mild -10 to 0 degrees Celsius. On favourable days, the temperature may climb to a pleasant +10 degrees, with colder periods potentially bringing temperatures down to -10 degrees. One remarkable advantage of our northerly position is the extended daylight.

This prolonged daylight enhances our chances of finding favourable weather windows for our ski missions. In May, the sun is already setting around midnight, providing a unique experience to the adventure and enabling skiers to maximise their time in this Arctic environment.

What is the weather like?

Our minimum group size is set at 4 skiers. If you are an individual or a pair interested in joining the ski trip, feel free to reach out, and we will keep you informed about the available trips. While the maximum group size is set at 8 skiers, our lodge has the capacity to accommodate up to 12 guests, and we can arrange for additional guides to accommodate larger group sizes.

How many skiers are there in a group?

Our guides are enthusiastic and caring leaders for your tours. As locals of the Westfjords, information about local wildlife, history and culture and possibly even hot gossip will be offered to open ears. Several members of our team have received masters degrees at the local university, and have settled here thereafter making up 50% of our staff. Borea is a very international team with over 10 nationalities!

Who leads the tours?

All guides receive training in first aid and cpr. Borea guides also receive training from wilderness medicine courses for safety in the backcountry. Guides graduating from this course receive a Wilderness First Responder certificate upon completion.

What qualifications do your guides have?

To apply, please submit your CV and a cover letter to info@borea.is by January 22, 2027.

Selected candidates will be contacted for interviews starting January 25 through February 12, 2027.

Ideal candidates are:

Experienced in hiking and/or kayaking tours

Flexible with scheduling and adaptable to new situations

Certified in First Aid, WFR, or rescue skills (based on tier requirements)

Confident Cooks for groups of 2-12, comfortable shopping and preparing meals on trips

Skilled in Outdoor Leadership and sustainable practices

Willingness to relocate to the Westfjords for the summer season (local housing not provided)

Do we hire?

Borea Adventures adheres to the principles of low impact, sustainable tourism. Our trips are “silent”, as we try not to use any motorised vehicles.

We like to encourage physical activity to suit any level of ability from easy kayaking and hiking through to exhilarating action sports. Our tours are led through the lens of respecting nature, utilising renewable energy sources (solar and wind), and to champion local communities and resources whenever possible.

Our ideal is to offer the best trips, cause no unnecessary harm, and inspire people.

What is your approach to sustainable tourism?

We strive to reduce our environmental impact for our tours by utilising renewable energy sources at both of our bases in Hornstrandir (solar panels and wind turbines). Our food choices for our tours prioritise local produce rather than imported commodities, and we strive to reduce food waste and recycle as much as possible.

We disseminate best practices to the public on behaviours around local wildlife, even by taking the initiative to set up a boundary around a nearby fox den to reduce the disturbance of encroachment and foot traffic. By giving the foxes the ability to decide the distance they want to maintain with us, we can spectate their natural curious behaviour in a peaceful way.

How do you minimise the environmental impact of your tours?

We collaborate with local conservation projects in Hornstrandir relating to Arctic Foxes, beach cleanup initiatives, and identifying whales for our local catalogue. As a stakeholder in the area we often provide logistical support as well as shelter during changeable weather conditions. Please contribute to citizen science with your photos with Happy Whale.

Do you participate in any conservation initiatives?

Call us at +354 456 3322. Please send an email to us with any information, attachments needed for your support at info@borea.is

How can I contact customer support?

We try to respond to your inquiries within 24hrs, please bear with us if your waiting time is longer.

What is your response time for inquiries?

Mobile phone signal is unreliable but there are known locations that have good reception and emergency calls can be made. Please check in with the Hornstrandir Visitor Centre before you depart. For emergency situations, your guide is able to contact national emergency service lines through the use of their VHF radio. Our guides also use Garmin inReach systems, though these units are prioritised for our longer and more strenuous tours.

Is there a helpline for emergencies during the tour?

How do I get to Ísafjörður

Ísafjörður is much closer than you’d think, and it’s not even that expensive to get here!

Now there are many airlines with scheduled flights into Iceland. As far as we can see there are direct flights to Iceland from the following cities during the summer months and many of them the whole year: Alicante, Amsterdam, Baltimore, Barcelona, Basel, Bergen, Berlin, Boston, Copenhagen, Eindhoven, Frankfurt, Friedrichshafen, Glasgow, Gothenburg, Halifax, Helsinki, London, Madrid, Manchester, Milan, Minneapolis/St. Paul, München, Denver, New York, Orlando, Oslo, Paris, Stockholm and Zürich. There are probably more destinations and the list changes all the time.

There are a few websites that may help you search for cheap airfares into the country. Check the Travelsupermarket and the Icelandic search engine Dohop.

## Best way to Ísafjörður

You arrive in [Keflavik International Airport](https://www.isavia.is/en/keflavik-airport) about 40 minutes away from the capital city of Reykjavik. From the domestic airport in Reykjavik there are 2-3 daily 40 minute flights to Isafjordur. You can take the Fly-Bus between the airports and most of the time you can continue same day. Check out Air Iceland Connect for schedules and special offers.

You can also rent a car and drive to Ísafjörður. The drive, over mountain passes and through fjords is an adventure itself. It’s about 440-500 km depending on which route you take. A new road via Arnkötludalur opened in 2009 which completes the asphalted pathway the whole way, and kills the old myth of bad roads in the Westfjords! The drive will normally take you 5-6 hours.

A new tunnel opened in September 2020 under the infamous mountain pass between the fjords of Arnarfjörður and Dýrafjörður. That tunnel makes it much easier to travel through the Westfjords all year round and shortens the route up the West coast.

For accommodation in Reykjavik there are many options of hotels and guesthouses that we can book for groups. Please ask us for individual [bookings](/contact).

We strongly recommend you to spend a few extra days visiting the West Fjords and other parts of Iceland. We’re happy to help you arranging few days in the area or give you good tips about exciting things to do while in Iceland.

About Westfjords

## Westfjords Iceland

The Westfjords of North West Iceland have a lot to offer adventure seekers looking for great experiences in higher latitudes. The area is sparsely populated with vast areas of untouched nature and beauty. It’s fair to say that the [Hornstrandir Nature Reserve](/hornstrandir) is truly the icing on the cake when it comes to unspoiled nature, all the way from the coast to the highest mountaintops.

In the northern most part are the huge bird cliffs of Horn and Hælavík with their large colonies of Kittiwakes, Common Guillemots (Murr), Razorbills, [Puffins](https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/animals/birds/puffin-facts/) and other seabirds. There is also number of protected Arctic Foxes, some of them fairly tame around people.

Many of these bays and coves were inhabited throughout the last centuries but the entire area was abandoned in the 50’s and 60’s due to increased job opportunities and better quality of life in the surrounding towns. There are no roads, power lines or other man made structures except a few summer houses in some parts of the area and ruins of times gone by.

The nature of Westfjords has been in command for fifty years and that makes the area very special. Part of the Nature Reserve, is the Jökulfirðir area (Glacier Fjords) – five fjords within one large bay, each one with its special character.

The south side of Ísafjarðardjúp Bay is occupied by about 4.000 people in the towns of Bolungarvík, [Ísafjörður](/about-isafjordur) and Súðavík and in a few isolated farms. There are seven fjords in this area and even if most of them have a road along its coast, they still provide many interesting opportunities for sports and wildlife watching. The two main islands in the bay are Vigur and Æðey. They are havens for seabirds and have large populations of Eider ducks, Puffins and Black Guillemot. The ice cap of Drangajökull is the only glacier in the Westfjords and the fifth largest in Iceland and is easily accessible all year around.

There is geothermal activity in a few places in Ísafjarðardjúp. Most prominently in the Reykjanes peninsula where there are hot springs and an outdoor swimming pool. There are also interesting underwater springs in the sea, close to the beach.
