Summer Arctic Fox Photography in Hornvík camp

In Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, the Arctic foxes roam the land and Hornvik bay is probably the best place in the world to photograph this only original land mammal in Iceland in the summer. In Hornstrandir, all flora and fauna is protected by law and that makes the foxes more relaxed around us humans. The bay itself is a very beautiful area with a lot of opportunities to photograph various bird species that nest there in the summer and the stunning landscape offers photographers many opportunities. The huge cliffs of Horn and Hælavík are the breeding grounds for over six million seabirds and that alone makes the area the perfect habitat for the Arctic fox. Hornvik Bay is quite inaccessible and a boat or on foot is the only mean of transportation, since there are no roads in Hornstrandir.

The tour in a nutshell, includes boat rides out to Hornvík and back, with accommodation in tents and delicious food for the duration of the tour. During the day, you can explore Hornvík bay and surrounding mountains, with numerous options of hikes and zodiac landing spots for various photography options. There are few dens in the valley and in the surrounding area of the camp and we often spot cubs on an evening even within camp, and playing on the beach.

This tour caters for your individual photographic needs. If you have a specific shot in mind, or would just like to spend an extended period out at our camp and hike on your own, this is the tour for you. You are in charge of your time in Hornstrandir, accompanied by a knowledgeable Borea guide, who will take care of preparing delicious meals and making sure things run smoothly, so you can focus on your photography.

What do I need to bring

Here is a brief list of things to have. Of course you might have your own preferences but it’s a good starting point so you will fully enjoy your tour.

  • You don't need to bring a sleeping bag but do bring a sleeping bag liner and a pillowcase.
  • Thermal underwear, at least two sets of shirts. Wool or synthetic. No cotton!
  • Wool or fleece thermal mid layer. Take two thin layers instead of one thick one.
  • Waterproof and breathable pants and jacket.
  • Thermal jacket (down or fiber).
  • Wool / fleece hat.
  • One pair of gloves and one pair of mittens.
  • 2 to 3 pairs thick wool / synthetic socks.
  • Trainers or Crocks to wear in camp.
  • Dark sun glasses.
  • Sunscreen / after sun cream.
  • Personal medical kit and prescription drugs if needed.
  • Small foam seat/mattress is nice to have while out in the field.
  • Thermos. Optional but good when it’s cold outside.
  • Soft travel bag (no hard suitcases) that is easy to carry. Soft bags, preferably with shoulder straps, are very good to have for easy transportation on our boat to the zodiac to get to shore.
  • Make sure that you can carry your camera gear in a waterproof bag for the zodiac and beach landings. A simple thick plastic bag suits fine.
  • Swim suit and towel if you're feeling brave to have a dip in the sea or river!

Attention

Within our camp you will have access to spacious two person sleeping tents, heating and drying facilities, a fully equipped mess tent with kitchen and lounge, electricity to charge phones and camera equipment, running water and access to water toilets.

Please note, this is a remote camp site in Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, and whilst there is cold running water, there are no shower facilities.

Our Borea guide will ensure the tour runs smoothly during your stay, whilst also providing zodiac drop-off to more remote areas of the bay. They are however not a photography expert, and so this tour is perfect for those wanting to explore their own photography wishes, or hike, whilst having a guide take care of everything else.
